Trial bikes with Ion Areitio

he is 18 years old and is already a world champion on the trial bike in the junior category. Ion Areitio is the master of jumps and turns with the cyclist, the protagonist of today’s Ktek intermediate. His colleague Nagore Rementeria finds the champion in Hondarribia jumping on the rocks.

NAGORE REMENTERIA; Elhuyar Foundation: Oh, hello, Ion!

ION AREITIO; trial cyclist:Hello, good morning!

NAGORE REMENTERIA; Elhuyar Foundation: These bikes aren’t good for the street, they don’t even have a chair

ION AREITIO; trial cyclist: No, they are very different from the street biker, as you can see, starting with the chair and also because of the shape. The one on the left is a 20-inch bike with a small wheel, and on the other side, the one on the 26th, the wheels are a little bit thicker. Both are used for trial, but the technique is very different. This little one is better for tight places and places where a lot of skill is needed, but I prefer the big one to walk in big obstacles or difficulties.

NAGORE REMENTERIA; Elhuyar Foundation:Where are you training?

ION AREITIO; trial cyclist: Normally, in summer, here, at the Hondarribia pier, about three times a week, for two hours or so. But in the winter, because of the cold and because it darkens quickly, we have placed some stones and trunks inside a pavilion where I train. I go to the gym or run.

NAGORE REMENTERIA; Elhuyar Foundation: Just like here at home, right, Ion?

ION AREITIO; trial cyclist:Yeah, I already know these rocks.

NAGORE REMENTERIA; Elhuyar Foundation: You are now 18 years old. So far you have competed in junior world championships. From now on?

ION AREITIO; trial cyclist: So far I’ve been in junior. in September 2010 I was in Canada at the World Championship, and with both the small and the big biker, I won in both. And now I'm going to jump to the elite level. Now it's time to suffer!

NAGORE REMENTERIA; Elhuyar Foundation:Do you have very strict rules in the tournament?

ION AREITIO; trial cyclist: Oh, yeah, yeah. The goal is to pass over the difficulties without putting your leg on the ground.

NAGORE REMENTERIA; Elhuyar Foundation:And can the bike touch the obstacles?

ION AREITIO; trial cyclist: No, I don't. We receive a penalty for touching only the wheels, the pedals or anything else.

NAGORE REMENTERIA; Elhuyar Foundation:When you come in here, people will tell you something

ION AREITIO; trial cyclist:People in the village usually don't say anything, but people outside say "chaval are crazy" and such.

NAGORE REMENTERIA; Elhuyar Foundation: Do these bikes not have a minimum weight, as is the case with others?

ION AREITIO; trial cyclist: No, they have no minimum weight. Our goal is to make the biker weigh little. And we can say that little by little we have become obsessed with this weight. The bike has holes in the wheels. New materials are now being introduced. For example, manila is made of carbon, the separator is also made of carbon... most of the bike is made of aluminum.

NAGORE REMENTERIA; Elhuyar Foundation:Do you do this by removing as much material as possible from the bike?

ION AREITIO; trial cyclist: Yes, usually on the bike coming from the factory you can say that they are serial. Then each one takes his own bicycle and arranges it to his own liking. Drill holes in the rotors, select positions, change screws... We are obsessed with weight. It weighs 7.5 kilos, which is 7.8.

NAGORE REMENTERIA; Elhuyar Foundation:The difference is not very big.

ION AREITIO; trial cyclist: Although it looks much bigger, they are on par on the floor. As you can see, this has disc brakes, and this one doesn't; these are hydraulic brakes. With them being a small wheel, the disc brake brakes well. On the other hand, the disc brake here does not brake as much as is necessary.

NAGORE REMENTERIA; Elhuyar Foundation:As for the plate and the pinions, both very small, right?

ION AREITIO; trial cyclist:Yes, our goal is not to give little and go a lot of meters, but to have the power to go up with little.

NAGORE REMENTERIA; Elhuyar Foundation:It takes a lot of skill to do this, right?

ION AREITIO; trial cyclist:I think the core of this sport is to have balance, but other than that it is a very full sport: we use all parts of the body.

NAGORE REMENTERIA; Elhuyar Foundation:Thank you very much, Jon!

ION AREITIO; trial cyclist:To you, thank you!
