Oil used as fuel
Tifell and the IK4-Ikerlan technology centre have built a boiler with different fuel mixtures. Among other things, it can work with the used oil that we use in the kitchen.
In this professional kitchen, 26,000 dishes are prepared daily. In total, there are 13,000 menus that are distributed in schools, residences and companies.Gastronomy are the facilities of Baska in Mungia. They use hundreds of liters of oil to make these menus.
JOSÉ LUIS DUZEGUI; Gastronomy Baska: We use 400 liters of oil per day, about 2000 liters per week.
In recent months they have begun to recycle the oil they use in the kitchen. It is reused as fuel in this new boiler. A mixture of used oil and diesel is used to obtain the fuel. Both in the same amount.
JOSÉ LUIS DUZEGUI; Gastronomy Baska: We save on CO2 emissions. The trucks don’t have to come to collect our oil and thus spend less gas oil. + As for the boiler, we have not yet reached the one-year deadline, but we believe that we can save 1000 euros per month, about 12,000 euros per year.
This boiler, designed and created in Vitoria, is called Biofell. It is the result of a joint research carried out by the company Tifell and the technology centre Ikerlan-Ik4.It can be used with different fuel mixtures. This is the main peculiarity of this boiler.
Among other things with biofuels, mixtures of vegetable oils and diesel, and also with the addition of cooking oil to diesel.
RICARDO MARÍN; Ik4-Ikerlan :We wanted to make boilers more ecological, maintaining the good and clean burning levels achieved so far. Instead of using so much fossil fuel for the stoves, we plan to encourage the use of products obtained from agricultural activity.
But, how can a boiler work with different fuel mixtures?In the present invention, it has been necessary to mold, redesign, the elements contained in a conventional gasoil boiler.To be able to adapt to different fuel mixtures.This is one of the elements that have been transformed: the burner.
This is where fuel and air come together, resulting in combustion.The pump and the fan that injects fuel into a traditional burner work with a single motor. In fact, the mixture of air and diesel in these boilers is always the same.
RICARDO MARÍN; Ik4-Ikerlan:We studied the fuel mixtures we wanted to use in the boiler and found that each mixture required a different air-fuel ratio for the burns.
That’s why this new smoker has been designed. In this case, the blower and the fuel injection pump each have its own engine.To provide the appropriate air-fuel ratio for each mixture.
With this new element, the boiler is ready to start testing different fuel mixtures.The first analysis was done with biofuels.
JOSÉ IGNACIO FERNÁNDEZ DE MENDIOLA ; Tifell Electro Solar: We started mixing diesel with biofuels, starting with 10% and reaching 100% a. We found that the boiler performance was good and the greenhouse gas emission results were also very good. The boiler with biofuels was in perfect condition.
RICARDO MARÍN; Ik4- Ikerlan:Problems came at the moment when we started looking at numbers. The results of the measurements of these two parameters were very good, but the cost of biofuels is double that of diesel.
using 100% biofuels makes the boiler run smoothly. But this option is too expensive.Vegetable oils in search of cheaper fuels have been the next choice for researchers:rapeseed oil, soybean oil and cooking oil have been tested.

However, oils derived from plants have the problem of viscosity.In terms of viscosity, the difference between vegetable oils and biodiesel fuel is remarkable. It also has a simple explanation.To make biodiesel, they remove viscous components from vegetable oils. That’s why it’s biodiesel, the original oil but more refined.
RICARDO MARÍN; Ik4- Ikerlan: Viscosity is a problem. Burners operating with liquid fuel spray this liquid with the aid of an injector. If the liquid is viscous, it will be more difficult to pass through the injector.
This apparatus has been developed to measure the viscosity of mixtures with vegetable oils.Thanks to this, the user will be able to know if the mixture satisfies the conditions suitable for combustion.On cold days, the viscosity of the oil increases significantly, so this device will be especially helpful on days below five degrees.
The boiler is already on the market and can work with the following mixtures: Mixing gas oil and cooking oil in a ratio of 50%.In the case of vegetable oils, 70% of the mixture will be rapeseed and soybean oil and 30% will be diesel oil.
ROCARDO MARÍN; Ik4- Ikerlan: There is a European label called Blue Angel, which is German and is the most stringent European standard in terms of emissions. Well, the level of pollution we've achieved in this case, it's below that standard.
JOSÉ IGNACIO FERNÁNDEZ DE MENDIOLA; Tifell Electro Solar: The boiler pollutes the environment less . And it’s less polluting and saves more compared to traditional boilers.
Whoever wants to reuse the oil used in the kitchen in the boiler will have to filter well.It is essential to remove traces of water and food so that the boiler does not have problems.The boiler also has more features: it is a condensation boiler that takes advantage of the condensation of the steam. In addition, the user can regulate the power of the boiler at all times, also allowing the heating of the water through the solar panels if desired.
