Detecting the creators of mastitis
Vacunen, the Basque company, presents a new kit for the simultaneous identification of the main pathogenic agents that cause pain in the udder of cows.
This kit is particularly useful in the case of the three main micro-organisms responsible for contagious pain in the milk samples in the tank and in the individual milk samples. In addition, the high sensitivity of the kit will allow a better control of this disease.
The kit is designed for use by anyone in the laboratory. It is a very direct method in which the results are automatically analyzed and displayed by means of software.
From Earth to Mars
The Mars 500 mission is underway. For the first time, a human crew simulates a trip to Mars and spends 520 days aboard the spacecraft, as if it were on a real mission.
The mission, which started this week, has a crew of 6 members: 2 Europeans, 3 Russians and 1 Chinese.
The experiment will bring to life the situations of a real mission on Mars, and from 250 days onwards, half the team will have to go down to exploratory work for a month. To do this, they will have to wear special clothes made by the Russians.
The transformation of neuroglia into neurons
Scientists at the Helmholtz Center in Munich have transformed certain brain cells into two types of neurons. Cell reprogramming allowed the neuroglycans to synapse like neurons.
This finding could be of great importance in the investigation of treatments against neurodegenerative conditions.
[Acupuncture against pain]
The journal Nature Neuroscience reports that research by a team of scientists at Rochester University in New York shows that acupuncture reduces pain by helping to release adenosines. Adenosines are a derivative of the molecule that provides energy to cells and, after a blow or wound, relieves pain by inhibiting nerve impulses. In the experiment with mice with leg pain, it was found that using acupuncture needles significantly increased the level of adosin and the pain in the mice was relieved.
