The Icebreakers
Why are icebreakers capable of navigating the icy waters of the poles? We’ll explain in this video
I'm not afraid of the approaching winter. When the cold freezes the polar sea, the icebreakers show what they are really made for. There are three characteristics that make a ship an icebreaker: the shape of the hull, the strength of the hull and the power of the engines. The shape allows the ice to be cut, skewed and advanced. The resistance is essential to prevent the hull from crashing in this battle: the double hull is usually reinforced with a layer of steel of almost half a meter. And in terms of power, the Russians have the most powerful icebreakers, with atomic engines: these motors can provide up to 75,000 horsepower. This force is necessary. When the ice sheet is about 5 meters, the bow cannot be cut continuously. Then he puts it on top of him and breaks it with the weight; sometimes, he pulls it back and starts. And to lift 25,000 tons and get out of the water, it takes a lot of horses. This immense power is also sad and paradoxical, as the polar ice is becoming out of place as it melts.
