Elhuyar Encyclopedic Dictionary of Science and Technology

Report on the latest work published by Elhuyar: Encyclopedic Dictionary of Science and Technology. In addition to being a consultative work for students, teachers and experts, this new encyclopedic dictionary is designed for communication professionals, translators and anyone interested in science and technology. We have spoken with the director and coordinator of this intense work.

23,000 concepts. 50 areas of
knowledge. 607 articles. 1,500
images.

ANTTON GURRUTXAGA; Elhuyar Foundation: Our vocabulary therefore has more to do with being a collector than with being a creator or a proponent. In fact, we’ve been using science and technology in Basque for more than 30 years, and there’s a job there somehow, a textbook on the one hand, and a dictionary on the other. And the vocabulary has sought to collect all this in some way - if not all of it, the basic level of it - and to collect it in several areas in a single work. This is what we wanted to do and what we wanted to offer to Basque society.

more than 200 articles. Working
group of 30 experts in content decision-making. ANTTON

GURRUTXAGA; Elhuyar Foundation: To organize all this, fortunately today through email and technological resources, it is possible to do so. Our desire was that at the beginning one person from each area would be the facilitator - we have named these people as such. We have had an expert facilitator in each area and with this person we have worked on the content that we should include in this area, both conceptual and terminological, and then these experts have somehow paved the way for us to reach out to people who would write encyclopedic articles.

the dictionary contains 6 sets of knowledge.
The exact sciences.
Science of Matter and Energy. Sciences of
the Earth. Life
and health sciences. The technology. The technology.
The general
ones.

ANTTON GURRUTXAGA; Elhuyar Foundation: Our intention has been to adopt a basic level of science and technology in the vocabulary in some way. The criterion we have adopted to define this basic level in some way has been to consider the ESO, the Baccalaureate and the University First Year. That's the idea. After all, that is where the terms currently used in Basque are an introduction to our dictionary.

It's in the book. And
on the CD.

ANTTON GURRUTXAGA; Elhuyar Foundation: The idea is that the dictionary will be the internet dictionary in the future. This means that we have to think about how we will work from now on to keep the vocabulary up to date on the net. We know how much science and technology, especially technology, expands and diverges, which requires a special effort if we are going to keep the vocabulary up to date on the web. So from now on we have to think that we have a wide network of experts there who are willing to participate and get involved in the vocabulary, and how we will maintain it in the future, how we will maintain it and how we will expand it, if there is any possibility of expanding it.
