[Pugilistic dementia]
According to the data, 17% of boxers suffer from chronic mental illness. The origin of the disease is the constant blows that boxers receive in the head, as the blows result in microhemorrhages and irreversible damage to the brain tissue. When a boxer receives a direct hit, a hit similar to the one we would receive if we hit ourselves against a wall, the head is displaced. In contrast, the brain mass shifts later due to inertia. The movement between the head and the brain mass does not coincide, which increases the pressure inside the skull. As a result, bleeding occurs. But the most serious blow is the “crochet”. For what reason? Well, because there's a rotation of the head and the brain in the trunk. This dangerous blow can damage the arteries of the brainstem. When a person begins to suffer such blows frequently, as in the case of boxers, the first symptoms of pugilistic dementia begin. At first, problems with movement appear, then a lack of concentration and loss of memory. Finally, in the most severe cases, dementia and psychiatric conditions can occur.
