This photo has been the winner of the competition organized by the journal Science and the National Science Foundation of the US. Each year they reward the most innovative photographs and images that combine science and art. Besides the photographs, the infographics, images, interactive images and illustrations compete in their respective departments.
The image is a tick nymph from the ear of a hamster. During his feeding, the photographer discovered the autofluorescence contained using the confocal microscope of laser scanner.
