Superconductivity in doubt

1998/09/01 Elhuyar Zientzia Iturria: Elhuyar aldizkaria

In addition to cold fusion, one of the main challenges of science is to achieve superconductivity at normal temperatures. A researcher at New York State University claims to have created a carbon fiber superconductor and a debate has been opened among scientists. The researcher states that applying carbon fibres at high temperatures in an epoxy or cement matrix can generate negative resistances.

Thus, in a circuit of this material, electrons are directed to the side with higher negative charge, rather than the opposite. However, this phenomenon goes against the Second Law of Thermodynamics, as recognized by the researcher himself. Negative resistances have only been achieved in high tensions so far, so scientists are in doubt with the measurements that have been made on this discovery. Further measurements of superconductivity will be required to check the phenomenon.
