The immune system suffers damage space

2002/01/25 Elhuyar Zientzia

Research conducted by NASA reveals that the immune system does not act as on Earth in space. For example, it has been observed that the effectiveness of T cells that protect the body from external aggressors decreases. These cells do not reproduce properly in space and have difficulty sending signals and moving.

It is known that on Earth stress affects the immune system, due to the secretion of hormones that alter the behavior of T cells. Therefore, what happens in space may be due to stress. However, apart from hormones, researchers still do not know if the conditions that space has are harmful or not, such as weightlessness.
