In La Coruña there are three centers dedicated to science, aren't they too many?
The buildings are located in three places of the city, conditioned by the history of the city. The House of Sciences is a palace located in the center of a small park, which by its geometry could not grow. This has its advantages by enriching the neighborhoods and creating new infrastructures. To properly visualize each of the museums, more than two hours are needed, so it is essential to rest before seeing one and seeing the other. The dispersion of buildings can contribute to it. On the other hand, responding to his question, growth has not come from whim, but in La Coruña demand increased at a given time.
Request in figures?
In the House of Sciences we receive every year 150,000 visitors, in Domus we are more than 200.000 and in the aquarium we have reached 500.000.
Do you have dolphins?
No, we do not give special importance to the performance of shows; we value more education and environmental awareness. However, the aquarium can be spectacular, among other things because we have an underwater room, the largest in Europe, where you can feel the same feeling of being in a submarine.
What do you think should be the role of such buildings?
I think the main ones are two: on the one hand, work the motivation and on the other, offer the image. Science museums must, first of all, sell the positive image of science, so that people associate the word science with pleasant memories and situations. The word science is often related to threats, or to school experience, was an incomprehensible, difficult, absurd science many times, as many friends who come to the museum tell me, "Hey Montxo, if I was a child there would have been such things, I would never have opted for literature studies." I think that's one of the functions of this kind of centers, putting science in place. Many times it is said that science is not good and that progress and development are not good, it seems that things are being invented and people repent. And that's not so, we should be proud, because science has made it possible for the human being to be where he is: we have a longer life, fewer children die, less hunger in the world thanks to science, reaching a population of 6,000,000 people was just a dream, in short, we have to get people to look at science differently, to appreciate it more.
