Simone de Beauvoir said that women are not born and are made, placing the cultural construction of femininity at the base of women’s oppression. Femininity, a concept woven with cultural, historical and social threads, has in medicine a mirror that reflects and distorts its complex reality. Historically, the lives and bodies of women have been pathologized, and control over women has been administered through pills disguised with a coating. The term “hysteria” is a representative example of the pathologization of women’s behavior. This disorder, which refers to an emotional imbalance, was associated in ancient Greece with a deviation from the role of women, and was associated with a condition of the reproductive system (specifically the uterine deviation). We still maintain the weight of the old narrative that relates emotional chaos to femininity.
