Gene that does not like nicotine

1999/02/07 Kortabarria Olabarria, Beñardo - Elhuyar Zientzia

A group of researchers from the Georgetown University of the United States has identified the gene related to nicotine dependence. 289 smokers and 233 non-smokers investigate at Georgetown University.

According to the study, those who had the SLC6A3-9 gene were less likely to be smokers; and those who had that gene and were smokers started smoking later than the others and also quit smoking more easily than the others. Once this gene is identified, new treatments can be investigated to combat smoking.
