Winners of the On Zientzia video contest. Starting from the left, Sergio Rodríguez and Nerea Blanco (2nd prize), Igaratza Fraile (special mention to Iñigo Onandia), Daniel Morcillo (1st prize) and Wiwat Nuansing (3rd prize). Ed. : Iñigo Ibáñez.

Things of birds. The pen is the title of the winning video competition On Zientzia, and the author Daniel Morcillo Garrido. The awards ceremony took place in Chillida Leku, where the room was filled to watch the award-winning videos.

He was excited with the Daniel Morcillo prize and with the applause received. Biologist and II. Morcillo is a professor of education, and his fondness for birds, photography and the production of documentaries is very old: "At the age of 13-14 I started to follow the animals when I had my first photo camera. And when I studied Biology, I studied at the Faculty of Communication, with the intention of making documentaries. Then, professionally, I went on the path of education, and this has remained a hobby."

Morcillo, through beautiful images, shows in video how the feathers and the examples that "hook" the viewer serve. Some probably unknown to many spectators. This is the feature highlighted by the jury of the video contest On Zientzia: "This work has been able to tell new things from an apparently normal object. The strength and quality of the story engage the viewer with a 'sober' pen. Morcilla has received a prize of 3,000 euros for this work.

In addition to the main prize three others were distributed. The second prize went to Nerea Blanco and Sergio Rodríguez for his video Doppler Effect and radar. "We left the series The Big Bang Theory. In a chapter the Doppler effect was discussed. It gave us grace and we decided to try to do something for people to understand the Doppler effect," explained Blanco. According to the jury, with few resources and imagination, it is a video well drawn, very related to everyday life. Always remember that we pass by a radar. "We thought that with the big technological centers we had no choice compared. But we played," said Rodríguez.

The third prize literally responds to the motto of the series of events that has included the On Zientzia contest: Passion for Knowledge. In fact, this is the main feature highlighted by the jury and the reason why the prize has been awarded: the video and the passion for science shown by the authors. For this reason, and for the originality of the video, the Science on the way by Wiwat Nuansing has received the third prize. Nuansing is a researcher at the CIC nanogune, originally from Thailand, who after receiving the award spoke of: "I wanted to show that science is everywhere, also here in Donostia. And that if you have interest and desire to have fun you learn a lot. In my video, for example, with a bottle of Coca-Cola I look at the earrings."

These are the three main awards of the contest, but the jury of the contest On Zientzia has made a special mention to the video presented by the researcher of Azti-Tecnalia, Iñigo Onandia. Fishing in science is the title of the video and with this special mention the jury wanted to reward the capacity and the divulgative effort of the research centers. Onandia worked at the Norwegian Sea and could not receive the award live, but his colleague Igaratza Frail reminded the fishermen "because they take us to their boat. Without them this video would be impossible".

The jury of the video contest On Zientzia has been composed of five people: Enrique Zarate, responsible for the activities of the City of Passion for Knowledge; Marian Iriarte, director of foreign relations of the Gipuzkoa Campus of the UPV; Alberto Gorritiberea, director of cinema; Onintze Salazar, physicist of Euskalmet; and Beñar Kortabarria, director of the television program Teknopolis.

They have had a lot of work to choose the winners. In fact, there have been many videos that have been presented to the contest and have been varied the topics, approaches and participants: students, teachers, researchers of technology centers, professionals of the audiovisual sector...

In total, 50 videos have participated in the On Zientzia Contest, of which 37 have arrived from Euskal Herria, 8 from Catalan countries, 2 from Berlin and 1 from Cambridge, Seville and Tenerife. As for the language, 10 videos were received in Basque, 35 in Spanish, 4 in English and one in three languages.

The organizers were as satisfied as the winners. The Elhuyar Foundation and the representatives of the Donostia International Physics Center expressed their desire to make a second edition before the success of a contest that did not know very well how it was going to be welcomed.

And once the prize giving is finished, a new prize for all attendees: The famous primatologist Jane Goodall brought the African voice, the voice of the chimpanzees. Elhuyar also wanted to pick up this voice and in the following number you can read the interview with Goodall.
