The Inguma database, preserving and claiming scientific production in Basque for 25 years
The INGUMA database celebrates 25 years as a meeting point and showcase for university-level Basque production. During the celebration of the anniversary, the representatives of the UEU have proclaimed the need for effective policies to increase scientific production in the Basque language.
in 2000, the UEU created the database of the Basque scientific community INGUMA, with the aim of collecting basic information about what has been produced orally and in writing in Basque in each of the fields of science and knowledge at university level in the last 60 years. The aim of this project has been to collect all the scientific-intellectual production (university level and in Basque) from the beginning of the consolidation of the rules of the united Basque language until today, and to make it available to society. At the moment we can find 14,217 authors, 48,395 documents and references of 220 institutions. This service is available for free at www.inguma.eus.
Iñaki Alegria Loinaz, former UEU director and co-founder of the database, highlighted Inguma’s objectives during the event held in Bilborock. He explains that the Inguma database has three main objectives: to collect, analyze and disseminate the Basque production of the scientific-intellectual community; to give visibility to the Basque scientific community and to offer a resource for the dissemination of research in Basque; and, through the promotion of knowledge among Basque speakers and the strengthening of the Basque knowledge network, to increase the prestige and visibility of high-level technical and academic Basque. “We proclaim the value of creating scientific production in Basque and we work to be recognized in the academic field. In addition to being a tool to identify Production in Basque and the community, it is also a resource for Collaboration and community compaction, as well as for the dissemination of Scientific Culture. Journalists, teachers, the educational community and cultural programmers have thousands of Basque experts at a click,” said Alegría.
HUHEZI researcher Amaia Torrealday Galarreta presented at the event the results of the study “Evolution of Basque scientific production through 25 years of Inguma from a bibliometric perspective”. The objectives of this work have been to know the historical evolution of scientific production in the Basque language, to measure its impact, to identify patterns of collaboration and to explore future possibilities, presenting the following conclusions:
- Inguma is the most complete tool to measure production in Basque.
- Production in Basque is on a declining trend, with less and less published in Basque (since 2000).
- What is published is mainly in the fields of Human and Social Sciences (78%), mainly in the form of articles.
- The collaboration between Basque authors and institutions is low.
- In large international databases, Basque productions have poor measurability and are almost invisible.
“Inguma, as a strategic resource, is and can continue to be an indispensable piece to guarantee the transmission of Basque knowledge and academic survival”, concludes Torrealday.
