Our guidelines
As society has changed, so has the magazine Elhuyar. Moreover, it has also intended to influence evolution through its principles. One of them has survived since its inception, at the heart of the magazine: communicating in Basque.
With science in Basque, the founders of the magazine tried to prove that Basque was the whole language. They proved well that it is. And we have continued to do so in Basque, as the most suitable tool to reach the Basque society.
In addition, and as shown in the decalogue published by Elhuyar to communicate about the environment, Basque is a useful tool to strengthen the attachment to nature and become an agent for sustainability.
In fact, being responsible for the environment is another of the pillars of the magazine. The times we live in demand it. Scientists have long had evidence on the evolution of climate, biodiversity and global health, and the journal has reported on them. Now, we want to dig deeper into this by offering readers a scientific and critical approach to situational awareness. Our goal is to propose solutions and attitudinal changes that contribute to social transformation.
To do this, we consider it essential to incorporate a feminist perspective, from the processes of production of the magazine, to the contents we publish and the ways in which they are published. We want to promote a paradigm shift towards the demolition of patriarchal structures and the construction of a more egalitarian and just society, which also considers other living beings, with other types of relations with those around and with the environment.
These guidelines (Basque, environmental responsibility and feminism) must be constantly remembered and developed. This is our commitment; our commitment to readers and society. It is an ambitious intention that we humbly approach, knowing that we will not always achieve it. But we'll try.
