Several researchers have found a technique for introducing genes into sperm cells. In the past there have been more attempts to introduce genes into embryos, eggs or sperm, but all have failed. This research has used immature male cells to avoid problems before they become sperm.
(Photo: M. Standberg).Scientists infected immature male cells of zebra fish with retrovirus with LacZ gene. Subsequently, the cells are raised in a culture until they develop sperm, obtaining embryos joined with eggs. Of the fish obtained a few had a gene inserted and transmitted to the descendants.
According to the researchers, this technique could be used with other animals, including man. According to them, it can serve to develop a gene therapy against various genetic diseases.
