Health workers in Gaza document Israeli massacre in BMJ magazine

An international team has collected testimonies from 78 health workers who were in Gaza between August 2024 and February 2025. Through them, they have documented patterns of injuries to the civilian population caused by Israeli attacks. In total, more than 23,000 traumatic injuries, mainly polytrauma, burns, amputations and cranial wounds, have been reported among those who managed to reach health services alive; and almost 7,000 were directly caused by weapons.

This was reported in the British Medical Journal. They explain that the most common injuries were burns, followed by injuries to the legs and arms. Among the damage caused by the weapons, most of them were caused by explosions and, in particular, they were injured in the head. In contrast, gunshot injuries were mainly found in the legs. As a whole, they show the cruelty of the attacks that the population is suffering.

In addition to direct injuries, health workers have also reported other types of harm, including infections, chronic illnesses, malnutrition and psychological trauma. In fact, the same magazine published in July a paper by the director of the World Peace Foundation, Alex de Waal (Foundation for World Peace, Tufts University), in which he warned that extreme hunger is a punishment for life and leaves lasting consequences.

The study, now published, has had a peer review, but it necessarily has limitations: on the one hand, it only includes data from this period and from certain parts of Gaza, and on the other, it is data collected by the workers themselves. Therefore, it is possible that the txotena is not completely complete, nor is it completely correct. However, a rigorous methodology has been used; for example, to prevent spills, Palestinian workers have not been involved in the investigation. Therefore, given the difficulties in accessing information, the published work is very useful to know the extent of the damage that the Israeli attacks are causing to the population.
