The new fuel injection system of the German company MTU is about to be marketed worldwide. The system is intended for diesel engines of locomotives and boats. In addition to reducing fuel consumption by 10%, the new system reduces particle emission and noise.
The new injection system will reduce fuel consumption by 10% and reduce noise and particle emission. Therefore, the new system is cheap and clean.
The fuel is injected directly into the combustion chambers from a single tank pressed in the form of fine spray. In other injection systems, camshaft driven injection pumps introduce the fuel under pressure, separating it into each cylinder. The main disadvantage of this technique is that the quality and pressure of the injection is governed by the shape of the cam shaft and the geometry of the injection pump.
It is therefore not possible to modify the amount of fuel injected or the injection time. It does not happen with the new system. Pressurization and injection are controlled separately by an electronic control system. The new system also ensures that the right amount of fuel enters the combustion chamber at indicated pressures and times.
The advantages of the new system are mainly at low speed.
