Hormonal contraceptives increase the risk of breast cancer by 20%
The relationship varies depending on the time of use and other risk factors
Although the effect of contraceptives on cancer has been studied for a long time, it is not entirely clear, among other things because they do not affect all cancers equally. Now, researchers at the University of Navarra, along with other international researchers, have carried out the most comprehensive systematic review to date on breast cancer and the use of hormonal contraceptives. Scientists have concluded that the use of birth control patches containing pills, intrauterine devices, or hormones for five years or more is associated with a 20% increase in the chance of developing breast cancer.
