They report a technique that can contribute to the survival of salmonids in danger of extinction. Two salmonids star in the news: trout and salmon. Well, in Japan, it has been achieved that the reproductive material of the trout grows within salmon.
In fact, within sterile male salmon, male trout gametes have grown. And the same with females: Trout oocytes have been introduced to salmon females and trout eggs have been laid.
The researchers have been hopeful for the success of the technique, since the reproductive material of salmonids is difficult to conserve and the technique of reproduction of threatened species can be viable to advance breeding with other species.
