10 years in action
Ten years ago, we created a new section in the magazine: In action. Their goal was to give a voice to young women researchers, as we had the impression that they often remained silent compared to their male colleagues. In more than a hundred interviews over the last ten years, we have confirmed that the imagination is real and that the terms for fraudulent syndrome, glass ceiling, viscous floor and other forms of gender discrimination are not abstract concepts, they have names and surnames and bodies.
Together with this, the interviewees gave us an intimate insight into the world of research. Far from the style and content of scientific articles, we have learned through their experiences not only what they investigate, but also what their joys and sorrows are; what difficulties they experience, and how to overcome them. This has allowed us to conclude that, in general, they have become researchers motivated by curiosity, passionate about their work, and that instability and uncertainty are their main problems.
It should be noted that the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU has accompanied us since the beginning. In fact, the interviews in the In Action section have been published simultaneously in the Elhuyar magazine and in the Science Bulletin, once a month. Now, in addition, with the support of the Vice-Rectorate of the Area of Scientific and Social Development and Transfer of the UPV/EHU, you can also listen to them in the podcast EHU-Acción.
That’s not the only change we’ve made over time. Along the way, we have opened our doors to other researchers who, even if they are not women, are excluded from stereotypes: those who are not heterosexual, those who study in edge disciplines, those who have refused to compete, those who come from impoverished countries, those with visual or hearing impairments
It is undeniable that in recent years there have been efforts in favour of inclusion in universities and research centres. We have a responsibility to promote these efforts in the journal Elhuyar, in which the researchers who have participated in Ekinean have made a truly valuable contribution. I would like to thank everyone for their honest, courageous and enriching testimony.
