The impact spill

When a comet or asteroid hits a planet, it leaves a remarkable trail. An example of this is the craters seen in this image of Mars. The largest one has a diameter of 20 km; in this case, there are other signs of violent collision in addition to the crater. In fact, in a collision like this, the temperature rises a lot and the materials melt. The emission of molten materials makes its way on the surface of the planet in the form of rivers and streams. This is what ESA’s Mars Express image shows. The colors indicate the height or depth of the floor: in green and yellow, shallow lands, in blue and purple, up to 4 km deep.
