Plitvice, the lake park
The water acquires an emerald color unlike anywhere else in the Plitvice National Park in Croatia’s Lika region. Lakes, waterfalls and springs are interspersed to offer an unbeatable spectacle.
The park has an area of 30,000 hectares, of which 22,000 are forests and the remaining 8,000 hectares are water. 16 lakes at different heights, connected by waterfalls. A total of 92 waterfalls.
The lagoons are natural dams punctured by water in the travertine. Travertine is a special type of limestone, very soft. This type of limestone is produced in karstic waters by the accumulation of lime dissolved in the water by the action of microorganisms, algae and moss.
The wooden trails allow visitors to get close to the waterfalls. These roads also serve to protect the raw material of the lakes, since the travertine is easily damaged if it is crushed.
Most people go to Plitvice in the summer, during the driest season. However, they always find water because the melting period in the mountains surrounding the lakes is slow but uninterrupted. This place is beautiful even in winter. In most cases, the snow covers the entire area, and the smaller waterfalls are frozen.
