The Kornati archipelago

If anywhere the islands are stacked side by side, they are located in the Kornati archipelago on the Croatian coast. there are about 150 islands, 320 square kilometers. It is the archipelago with the largest and most densely populated islands in the Adriatic Sea. However, according to the legends of the inhabitants of the area, the islands are much more than 150; just as many as the days of the year.

The smallest island has about 4 square meters. The largest, the Kornat, has 32.5 square kilometers; he has given the archipelago its name.

Kornati is a dry place, due to the climatology, but mainly due to the geology of the archipelago. It is dominated by limestone formed in the cretaceous, which has formed a huge karst; as a result, all the precipitation is filtered to the subsoil. There are no fountains, streams or lakes. However, it is considered that there are 700-800 species of plants in Kornati.

The spectacular sea cliffs on some islands are the result of the collision of the African tectonic plate against the European one.

At the beginning of the 20th century, pastoralism and agriculture had sufficient strength. Today, however, most of the islands are inhabited and about three-quarters of the archipelago is protected within the Kornati National Park.
