Curiosities of the seas

Male fish of the family Opistognathidae incubate their eggs in the mouth. Once in a while they are thrown out to get oxygen and back inside. It is one of the rarities of marine animals. Eleven such stories have been compiled by marine biologist Ellen Prager in her book Sex, Drugs and Sea Slime; fertilization strategies, defense mechanisms, shape changes, camouflage skills... all accompanied by beautiful photographs.

The pygmy seahorse is another protagonist of the book. This curious fish measures only a couple of centimeters and is extremely skillful in camouflage. In fact, it has the ability to change color: in this photo, for example, it has acquired the color of the gorgonia that surrounds it.
