It's the lighthouse
The brightest light seen in the photo is the Cape Pallisier Lighthouse, located on New Zealand’s North Island. Mark Gee from Australia spent the night there. He got up at five in the morning to photograph the Milky Way. Then he realized that he had left the camera on the top floor of the headlight, 250 steps up.
He recovered the camera, moved away from the headlight, and took twenty photographs to complete this panoramic. "It was a lot of work to put them all together, but the result was worth it! ", says Gee. It is also worth it, because with this photo he has won the contest Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2013. One of the judges highlighted the beauty of the photo: "It's a wonderful composition. I like the way the Milky Way seems to flow into the lighthouse."
In addition to winning the grand prize, the category "People and Space" has also been won by Gee with the second photo. Mount Victoria in Wellington has silhouettes in front of the moon. Gee was two kilometers farther away, not by chance: "This wasn't about being in the right place at the right time; I worked on the plan to take this photo for almost a year."
