The Giant's Causeway
This Giant's Causeway is located on the north coast of Ireland in County Antrim. According to Irish mythology, this particular causeway was built by the warrior Finn MacCool. Apparently, he fell in love with a woman who lived in Scotland and, in order to reach her arms, decided to build a driveway in the sea.
Geologists have a very different argument for the origin of these structures. The 40,000 stone pillars that make up the Giant’s Causeway were created 65 million years ago as a result of volcanic activity.
The hexagonal shape of the columns is due to the instantaneous cooling of the lava. The lava entered through the cracks of the earth and, when it encountered the sea water, cooled down. This cooling caused crystallization of the lava and crystallization caused columnar fractures. Most of them are hexagonal, but there are also five, seven and eight sides.
However, there’s no denying that the road looks man-made. Researchers in Dublin also explored this possibility in 1692, when they were trying to discover the causeway and explain its origin.
