The snowflake photographer

“Under the microscope, I saw that snowflakes were wonders of beauty; and it was a pity that this beauty was not seen by others either. Each crystal was a masterpiece of design, and no design was repeated. When a snowflake melted, the design was lost forever. Such beauty is gone, leaving no trace behind.”

The words of Wilson Bentley. When he observed the snowflakes in an old microscope that his mother had given him when he was fifteen, he was amazed and Bentley wanted to draw them. But drawing before melting was a very difficult task and failed to accurately reflect the complex shapes of the flakes. So he thought about adding a photographic camera to the microscope. It wasn’t easy, but he adjusted the technique by testing and testing. on January 15, 1885, 125 years ago, he photographed the first snowflake in history.

Since then, that was the passion of Bentley's life. He photographed more than five thousand males. Five thousand “ice flowers”, in his words.
