Wildlife in gold
A golden horseshoe crab runs slowly over the mud. On top of it is a trio of gold-coloured fish, ready to catch the snacks that are exposed in the passage.
The horseshoe crab Tachypleus tridentatus has survived for 100 million years, but now has major problems, among them because it is overfished, both for food and because its blue blood is highly prized for medicine. Pangatalan in the Philippines has one of the best shelters in the protected waters of the island. It was there that this photograph was taken by the French marine biologist Laurent Ballesta. And it has been the best wildlife photography of 2023 in the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. The jury said: “It has been amazing to see the crab so vividly in its natural habitat in such a wonderful way. We are seeing an ancient species, very threatened, even critical to human health.”
And then there are other beautiful photos that the contest has left us.
