Wildlife in sight
In the Hluhluwe Imfolozi reserve in South Africa, this black rhino was shot twice to remove its horns. Rhino horns on the black market are highly prized for the species’ misfortune. Although they were once the most abundant rhinos, black rhinos are now in danger, mainly due to illegal hunting. in 2015, it was estimated that only 5,000 remained.
Photojournalist Bren Stirton, who investigates the illegal trade of rhino horns, has seen more than 30 similar scenes. In this raw and beautiful photo, the fallen rhinoceros almost looks like a sculpture. Stirton has made it a souvenir of the species.
It has been the best wildlife photography of this year in the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. In the following pages, other beautiful photos that the contest has left us.
