At the threshold of
the "Passion for Knowledge" festival that will come in autumn, and to start to warm up the atmosphere, the Kutxa Social Action and the International Physics Centre DIPC of San Sebastián have organised a series of conferences in the Kutxa Andia event hall. From May 13th to June 17th, the DIPC will talk about its research work in the last 10 years. What will be heard in the talks will be a preview of what will be presented at the September festival. To open the cycle of conferences, Pedro Miguel Etxenike, President of the DIPC, will give the lecture "The Excellent Utility of Invaluable Science", on May 13, in the Chamber of the Kursaal.
In order to combat
and control termites in the city, the Biotek-wood department of the Basque research centre CIDEMCO-Tecnalia has launched a project. The first step will be to know if the termites that are captured belong to the same colony or not. To this end, a portable kit identifying genetic markers is being developed. This information will be important for optimizing termite baits, since it will be necessary to place as many baits as colonies in order to radically destroy the colonies. To eradicate the termite pest in a house, neighborhood or city, it is necessary to know the number of colonies that must be faced, and the CIDEMCO-Tecnalia project seeks to find a solution to this problem.
NASA engineer Mark
Moore has designed the prototype of a single-seater aircraft. The aircraft would run on electric power and reach a maximum speed of 241 kilometers per hour. If it were ever built, it would be small and light: empty, 136 kilos. To this amount should be added the 45 kilos of battery and also the weight of the passenger. As a landing gear, the aircraft has a four-legged tail. In the words of the inventor, the prototype is, for the moment, only the final project of study and also a dream that is still far away.

Delirium Studios in Bilbao will create a fighting video game for the Nintendo Wii console. The provisional title of the application is "Kinito Ninja", and it is set during the feudal period of Japan. The multinational Nintendo first explored the potential of Delirium Studios to do this kind of work. Now, the Bilbao company is putting the finishing touches on the appearance of the video game and also looking for funding. The video game will be based on Two-dimensional animation. The managers of Delirium Studios believe that it will be ready by the end of 2011.
