History of Teknopolis
Hello, how are you? Welcome to Teknopolis. You see, this is not our set; today we have changed the stage and we have come to the street, to the city, close to you, close to our spectators.
And why? Because today is a very special day for Tecnopolisenza: today we celebrate 10 years. since the launch of the programme in February 1999, we have produced 223 programmes covering almost 1,000 reports and 13,400 hours of television devoted to science and technology.
And to celebrate such a special day, of course, we have prepared special contents. To begin with, we have prepared a short report that will make more than one smile. In it we have collected several old images of those initial programs, and the words of several friends who have been working behind the cameras.
on February 20, 1998, Teknopolis first appeared in public. The presenter and director, Pili Calcada, opened Elhuyar’s TV window in the way it looks. At that time, Iñaki Irazabalbeitia was the director and president of the Elhuyar Cultural Association. He was in negotiations with ETB.
IÑAKI IRAZABALBEITIA; ELHUYAR FOUNDATION: ETB said yes to us in '99. Yes, we had a condition. That they were willing to put technical means, but that we needed a sponsor to somehow do the work that Elhuyar had to do. We found this protector in the EITE, which must be appreciated, the faith that the EITE had was an idea like Teknopolis, because Teknopolis was an idea then, and it encouraged and supported it.
JOSÉ MARI OTERMIN; ETB: Ten years ago, the Teknopolis project came to ETB. He came modestly, he didn’t have any special or high demands on the budgets and schedules. He came modestly, but he did so in order to offer a space for scientific journalism.
IÑAKI IRAZABALBEITIA; ELHUYAR FOUNDATION: With this, the social integration of science that Elhuyar and Elhuyar carried out reached another window and another social projection. For what reason? also because we started doing it in
Spanish. Until then, Elhuyar had done little on television, and the project brought together little experience but a lot of enthusiasm. Alfonso Mujika and Beñar Kortabarria have been in the program since the beginning.
BEÑAR KORTABARRIA; ELHUYAR FOUNDATION: So the working group to do the weekly work: writing, editing and stuff like that, it was the two of us, which caused surprise when we were asked at the first meeting in ETB: and how many people are there to do that work? "Here, the two of us" a lot of us
cheaters. ALFONSO MUJIKA; ELHUYAR FOUNDATION: They didn't believe it.
IZASKUN PARDINA; ETB: My face was... I don’t think a program like this needs a group of 15 people, but not even two. And then the surprise was bigger when I found out that you didn’t have much experience in the world of television.
Basically, the way Teknopolis is made in 10 years hasn’t changed much. The topics are selected, the information is collected, the recordings are made, and then the editing of the reports usually comes. Currently, the images are recorded on cards and the editing work is done on computers. All these works were made in tapes at one time, but Teknopolis has been working in the digital world for some time.
A decade gives for many. The data of Teknopolis are representative: he has had 20 editors since the beginning of the program, 67 interviewees, more than 1,500 people have appeared in the reports and hundreds of topics, as well as curiosities.
ALFONSO MUJIKA; ELHUYAR FOUNDATION: I remember one day, it was in a technology center, we had a technician and he explained very well to us how the machine worked. And then when we told him, you have to say it in front of the camera, it wasn't a thing, it was repeated over and over again, and it wasn't a thing. We finally had to put a piece of paper on him, holding us back. And to say what he told us, he had to read it because he wasn't looking at the camera to say it. And, of course, he said it, but none of it was natural.
BEÑAR KORTABARRIA; ELHUYAR FOUNDATION: I’ve been dressed and paraded in Pamplona-Veleia in Romans, or having to put probes and probes in a brain research laboratory, and when I put the probes that caused my injuries, they made me scratch them terribly.
Teknopolis was born with the aim of socializing science and technology in a simple and understandable way, with the desire to transform the cold image of science from a distance into a warm image nearby. For this reason, adaptations have been made from season to season in Teknopolis, always with the intention of making an intense program.
AITZIBER AGIRRE; ELHUYAR FOUNDATION: I think the changes have been very positive. Now it's something else, it's got another dynamic, another rhythm. I like it a lot.
JOSÉ MARI OTERMIN; ETB: If we know their trajectory in these ten years and analyze it, we will realize one thing: that on television they do not advance projects of large sums that require good schedules, but that periodically adapt to the situation of the time.
The greatest effort to adapt was made in 2005: it was decided to give more strength to the graphic part of the program and, regardless of the comfort and security of the Miramón residence, to take the program to the street. At that time, Aitziber Aguirre had a period of experience in front of the cameras, and he set his face to that jump.
AITZIBER AGIRRE; ELHUYAR FOUNDATION: I had no experience in this. I was working in the lab with my pipettes, proteins, DNA and stuff like that. Behind the camera, yes, something I was walking through, but that jump was rough for me.
Relative fame, right? Maybe because I live in a small town that had
an impact. Teknopolis has always had three legs: One from ETB, with space in the programming and leaving some technical resources. The second leg is that of the Elhuyar Foundation, which provides content to the program, and the third leg is that of the sponsors, who put money in order to carry out the program. All three converge, and the equation gives 10 years.
BEÑAR KORTABARRIA; ELHUYAR FOUNDATION: They throw you off the grid or programming by the time you make the hole. We're there, we don't have a huge audience, but I don't think we make a big hole either.
JOSÉ MARI OTERMIN; ETB: There are three characteristics that I see for him: to constantly offer innovation, to make the necessary change apart from it, and thirdly, I would say that in these ups and downs he has had, he has periodically been able to find real solutions and solutions. That is why it has been ten years, I hope to do much more, and I can say that Teknopolis is already a part of the history of Basque Television.
