Simulator teacher
Although the driver is always on the front of the train, they are not usually the ones driving the train. The system is fully automated and it is the job of the drivers to ensure its proper functioning.
However, the fact that machines take the place of human beings has an impact on workers. In fact, some of the skills needed for the job are not put into practice. To avoid this problem, in the Bilbao metro, they are working with a new simulator. With a state-of-the-art simulator.
The new simulator allows you to work very close to reality, combining real train cabins with virtual reality. It accurately represents the 40 kilometers of the railway; curves, signs, slopes, tunnels, stations... The simulator is able to represent situations very similar to the real driving of the train, thus keeping the drivers fresh the knowledge they need for their profession.
ALBERTO ALBIZU; Metro Bilbao: This simulator is an important tool for us, because, well for us and also for our drivers, because it is there where we train what causes all the adversities, the breakdowns... in it, in the line of reality.
They also train drivers in the simulator for unusual situations. Problems with traction, such as getting off the track or obstructions that close the track.
The simulator is programmed with 65 breakdowns and more than 25 setbacks, but through a software capable of taking into account different variables, they can add new situations. It is also able to take into account other elements that influence the driver.
ALBERTO ALBIZU; Metro Bilbao: We had a first simulator, but it was limited there, this is more modern. He had caresses, and he has overcome it.
Three train types, and there was only one in the old simulator. And this allows the three of us to enter, then the exercises, the breakdowns and the adversities that we have prepared... allow us to enter more.
Drivers also learn not only what to do, but also why and how to do it.
ARITZ JORDAN; Driver: With this new simulator, we are taking steps or training to follow up on breakdowns, and in the face of some special events that may occur on the track, which is good for all drivers.
They work with a specific methodology. With exercises designed to achieve certain objectives. The simulator automatically detects errors made by drivers. This is how they work in the Bilbao metro to improve the work of their employees.
The automatic driving mode has greatly improved the reliability and safety of traffic. But for the system to be fully effective, people are still needed.
