Vultures have appeared frequently in the newspapers lately, believing that they have taken an aggressive stance. In an attempt to find a reason for the attacks on these animals, the blame has mainly been attributed to the closure of the sausage feeding grounds, a mandate given by the European Union due to the mad cow crisis. This is said to have caused the Saiyans to starve and, as a result, they have begun to attack living animals to feed them. This is the theory that has had the most impact, but not everyone agrees with this reasoning, and it is not the only theory. In Teknopolis we have knocked on several doors trying to clarify the matter and to collect different points of view.

SAIYANS TO ATTACK?

PRESENTATION OF:
Today’s Technopolis begins to talk about the problem created by the attacks of vultures, a subject that has appeared frequently in the titles of the newspapers lately.
Before we begin, however, let’s get to know the protagonists better: the saiyans.

The video is: The brown vulture is a great bird: it can have a width of more than 2 and a half meters. But instead of affecting these southerners, he almost always plans. First, it takes advantage of some ascending air current to reach its height, and then it goes from one to the other by planning. The only egg is laid in the winter, in January or February, and the
chicks start to fly around August.
It starts from the Mediterranean area and lives between the Himalayas. In our country, it is quite sedentary, but it can also be migratory. They scatter around the colony in a radius of 50-100 kilometers in search of food.
It's a scavenging animal. Despite the spectacular nature of the claws, the Saiyan does not have the strength to grasp and dominate the living animals underneath; nor does he have extraordinary abilities in movements. The beak, however, is strong so that it can pierce the skin of the animals and reach the food. The main food is dead animals and newly born calves.

THE PRESENTER:
The attacks by the Saiyans have caused great concern and concern among pastoralists and ranchers. One of those affected was Jesús Etxezarreta. This pastor of Segura always spends his summers in Urbia, but this last summer, he will never forget it.

The video is: Looks like the thing's out there. There was a time when the Saiyans only ate corpses and placemas from living animals and today they start to eat placemas and, by the way, they also feed the newborns and their mothers. It could be said that up to this point there is a consensus among all the actors, whatever happens. But that’s when the point of view begins to move away. Shepherds and cattle herders say they also attack animals that are lying down or partially weakened, animals that would not have much trouble if they were not attacked by the Saiyans. Environmentalists say that although they believed that he was previously alive, in many cases they were dead animals, lost sight of by shepherds in the last hours or on the last day. And that even when they attack living animals, they are animals that were quite sick and weakened or in some difficult port; those that could not leave.

THE OPINIONS OF: Jesus the Mansion, the Shepherd. Joxerra Aihartza, UPV

The video of... The lack of objective data is one of the shortcomings that can be found in relation to the problem. There are notable cases of animals that were alive but injured, but in most cases this is not the case. All that remains is the corpse, and there is little information that will explain exactly what the situation is before the saiyans start eating. Data collection has started in Navarre. Thus, in the last year or so, necrosis is performed when the report is received; the dead animal is examined. about 50 complaints were received.

THE OPINION OF: David Campión, Environmental Management of Navarra

The video of... Also in Gipuzkoa, in four or five of the 19 complaints received between March and September, it has been unequivocally confirmed that the animal was previously alive.

THE PRESENTER:
So what's going on? The cattle breeders say that the attacks have increased, and they are very sure of it; they have seen it with their own eyes. Due to the proliferation of complaints and the confirmation of several cases, the Aranzadi Science Association organized a technical conference last week.

Experts from Catalonia, Navarre, France and Spain were invited and presented their data and experience. The conclusion? Yes. There is very little data to make a reliable diagnosis. It became evident that the Saiyans population has increased; that attacks occur and have a great media impact; but they are not so sure when it comes to confirming that they eat many more live animals. In this uncertainty, what happens in Catalonia, for example, is striking. The regions with the lowest number of reported deaths are also the regions with the lowest number of animal cares.

One of the axes of this controversy is that of the mealtimes of the saiyans. Some people are quite clear: the disease of mad cows led to the closure of many grazing places in 2006, which has caused the Saiyans to be hungry. In the opinion of many of those affected, one of the solutions would be to reopen these pastoralists.

The video of... In terms of pastures, according to data from Navarre, in the last decades the saiyans had enough to eat even without pasture and the increase in populations has been more due to the decrease of direct attacks against the saiyans. In addition, reports of attacks began before the closure of the shelters. However, it is recognized that the pastures have contributed to the survival of the chicks and, in the last two years, it is also recognized that the closure of the pastures has a negative impact on fertility.

THE OPINIONS OF: Joxerra Aihartza, UPV. Jesus the Mansion, the Shepherd. Olate Arrarte, UPV

The video is: . Lack of consensus on the causes, and not even on the solutions. In any case, the administration has begun to do something. The European Union, for example, has made the mandate on the closure of food centres more flexible. As a result, they are starting to open up again. They also continue with small pastures in the north and are also open in Navarre. And they are also beginning to pay compensation in Álava, Guipúzcoa and Navarra; not in Bizkaia or Norte.

PRESENTER: As
you have seen, the issue of vultures is a very controversial issue, a problem with many and very different borders: on the one hand there is a media echo, as well as the changes that have taken place in livestock management... on the other hand, we can not forget the increase in the population of vultures and the closure of several grazing places for them. Pastoralists and ranchers need an answer, but experts say there is not enough data to propose a definitive solution. For now, therefore, we only have to wait. As far as we are concerned, we hope that it has helped us to have a somewhat broader understanding of this problem.
