Fried oil for the manufacture of biodiesel
The Department of Physical Chemistry has developed a project to convert the fried oil used in the canteens of the University of the Basque Country into biodiesel. Every month, 700 liters of oil are produced in the three campuses of the university. The project proposes the treatment of oil residues with methanol to obtain biodiesel. Laboratory tests using a decanter and a reactor have been successful. If the plan is implemented, it will be possible to obtain between 800 and 1,000 litres of biodiesel per month for use in heating boilers.
Boarding pass on the mobile
At Loiu Airport, users of Spanair and Iberia can obtain their boarding pass through their mobile phone. An image code received on the mobile allows passengers on Spanair’s Bilbao-Madrid flights to print a document authorising them to board the aircraft. The step taken by Iberia allows passengers to board the aircraft with the display of the mobile screen. To this end, special readers have been installed at boarding gates and security checkpoints.
The digital age
The Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of Mondragon University has just created Digitalaia. The objective of this new observatory is to analyze the relationship of digital technology with different areas of society. Teknologia digitalak unibertsitate aurreko irakaskuntzan, unibertsitate-irakaskuntzan, hedabideetan, euskaran eta kooperatibetan duen eragina aztertuko du ikerketa-taldeak, eta, hasteko, Humanitate Fakultateko ikasleek teknologia berriekin duten harremana aztertuko du.
[Migration of tuna fish]
The migratory movements of tuna have been made known thanks to an electronically marked bluefin tuna from Azti. Early estimates indicate that the bluefin tuna migrates between the Azore Islands and Portugal during the winter and returns to the Bay of Biscay in the spring. Thanks to the electronic brand it has been known that the bluefin tuna makes dives up to a thousand meters deep. Azti scientists marked bluefin tuna 15 miles north of San Sebastian’s coastline in August 2008. in August 2009, it was taken by members of a recreational craft 88 miles north of Baiko.
