The natural laboratory of the Kerguelen Islands

in the 1950s, the first scientific base was established on the sub-Antarctic islands of Kerguel. To complement the nutritional needs of scientists, several species of salmonids were introduced into their rivers. In fact, there were no fish in the rivers of the island. It’s been almost 80 years since that event. All this time, scientists have not stopped investigating to find out how the invasion of a foreign species has occurred and its impact on the ecosystem there. This year a research group from the UPV/EHU has also been in Kerguelen.
