Waiting for the salmon
We know perfectly well that many of you are exceptional videographers and, in addition, science lovers. For this reason, you will love the space that we present to you below.
Among all the works participating in the On Ciencia amateur video contest, Gorka Aranberri, Urdaibai’s electronic designer and engineer, has chosen one. Let's see which video he likes best!! !
The cold has provided an annual respite in Alaska’s Katmai National Park. Winter snows have drifted away to the peaks of the mountains, and nature takes advantage of the short summer break to recover lost fats, find the partner and equip them.
With the arrival of heat, the Alaskan vegetation awakens from its lethargy and undergoes rapid development. Of the species present, they find some particularly nutritious herbs as soon as the bears emerge from the bear holes, while waiting for stronger food resources.
During this season, the grizzly bears graze like cattle. In the valleys where the snow cover is disappearing, the grizzly meet dozens. All of them are hungry and all of them need to recharge their exhausted reserves as soon as possible.
The greatest contribution of energy, however, comes not from the earth, but again from the sea. But bears, unlike walrus or sea elephants, don’t need to dive into the sea to get food. In this case, it is the food itself that comes to him.
As the weeks go by, the attitude of taking it changes. More and more often they go to estuaries and look out over the water or the sea, waiting for the manna that will be the basis of their summer diet.
At the beginning of the summer, the coasts of Alaska are home to some special travelers who left their rivers years ago after their birth. It is an indispensable event that awaits impatiently on Earth. The survival of thousands of animals depends on this quote.
Now all that remains is to wait.
Finally, the day has arrived. The water in the fjords is buzzing with the return of thousands of salmon. And it looks like life has returned to the shores of Alaska.
With the rising tide, salmon enter the mouths of the rivers, where they will stay until their body adapts to the change in salinity. In a few days, the calm waters are filled with thousands of salmon eager to start their last odyssey. Once adapted, they resume their slow ascendant journey in the rivers where they were born, starting one of the most active cycles of these northern lands.
This is the day that the Katmai bears have been waiting for since they awoke from the winter’s lethargy. They will finally be able to recover their reserves. And the fishing began.
Fishing is not difficult because the amount of salmon is high. So everyone has access to fish. The nutritious contribution of the fish has satisfied the reserves necessary to overcome the period of lethargy, and the bears are now more relaxed.
