The phone has more and more uses: it also serves to open garage doors.

The phone has more and more uses. What was invented to talk to each other in the distance can be used for recreation, bank operations, or photography today. In addition, it also serves to turn on or off household appliances through the domotics.

Now, at Mondragon University, they have developed a new use. Let’s see what that use is. Almost certainly,

most of you have thought that this door has been opened by someone through a remote control. And it is, yes. The remote control sends a radio wave and the door opens.

But there are cases where the remote control cannot be used. For example, where inhibitors are present or where all radio frequencies for remote controls are occupied.

At the Matz-Erreka in Antzuola they make automatisms for doors, and a client with such a problem visited them a few months ago: all the radio frequencies were busy putting the doors of the garages in the area. The people of Matz-Erreka immediately saw what the solution could be: to open the doors through mobile phones.

The application to the doors, however, has not been developed in Matz-Erreka; they have turned to Mondragon Unibertsitatea. Teknopolis has also approached Mondragon Unibertsitatea, and we have entered through the door where the prototype is installed, upon request of authorization, and by telephone. What the residency team has done is to turn automatic doors into telephones.

Automatic doors typically include an electronic board for controlling when to open and when to close the door. A switch on the board is responsible for starting the door. The switch is activated by a button or remote control.

With the new system, however, a phone card is placed on the board, and this phone card will activate the switch and consequently start the door itself.

EGOITZ ARRUTI; MONDRAGON UNIVERSITY: The technology is very developed and there has been no such great innovation, what needs to be done is to create a special application and program these modems or phone systems inside. We program them through Java and what we do is create a database where there will be those who have permission to open the door. There is a difficulty in making the Matz-Erreka board compatible with telephony, and making sofware of it.

Once the two have been made compatible, their use is very simple: the user makes the call, the door plate confirms whether the number that made the call is authorized and the door opens. The call is also free, as it is a missed call. I mean, the door starts, but it doesn't answer the call.

EGOITZ ARRUTI; MONDRAGON UNIVERSITY: It is a reality that all people have a mobile, or maybe two, and with that mobile we do things like call, play, in some cases even make payments over the phone, so why can’t we open the door of our house over the phone?

However, the new system also has a second application: maintenance. since 2005, there have been changes in European regulations, which have led, among other things, to the need for more frequent security surveillance. Currently, the technician must go to the door to perform this maintenance.

With this product we manage to do maintenance remotely, through a phone. Changing the parameters of a door, or making a diagnosis of a door... this product is mainly to help.

There are two ways to do this maintenance. One is for the technician to call and ask the door for a report; and the other is for the door itself to send a message informing the technician of any faults. Next, the technician will see if he can fix the fault by phone or from the server, or if he needs to go to the door, since the mechanical problems can not yet be solved virtually.
