Europeana, digital library
The European Union launched the Europeana project three years ago. They wanted to create a common point of access to libraries, archives and museums across Europe and, by the way, to make European information resources available to all through the network. Finally, on November 20, 2008, the
Europeana website saw the light: it contains two million works and can be searched in 21 languages. You can find image, text, audio and video files... as well as paintings, newspapers, books, radio broadcasts, movies and TV shows from museums. More
than a hundred European libraries, video libraries, pinacotecas, hemeroteca and photo libraries have participated in providing content to the Web. In the next report we will see how some shoes from the 16th century or an audio file are digitized.

Semi-automatic digitization of books.
Fragile works are digitized manually or semi-automatically. Even in the case of books, once digitized, it is possible to observe the works in great detail.
Automatic digitization of books.
The works bound and guillotined with paper covers are digitized automatically by a machine.
Digitization of books in piles.
Other works are digitized in piles. In total, about 2,500 documents per week are placed on the network.
Digitalization of the press.
The journals of many European hemerotecies are also digitized and treated. Europeana is still a prototype, but is expected to be fully operational by 2010 with 10 million digital files.
