Cleaning of biotechnology

Just by expanding many of the products we use for cleaning, we realize that the product carries chemicals. Some of them are toxic and dangerous ingredients that harm not only health, but also the environment. In an attempt to find an alternative to this type of products, it has emerged that instead of using toxic components for their production, they use natural substances and have an equivalent cleaning power. To combat soiling, they use microorganisms selected in the laboratory: fungi, bacteria and enzymes.

Corrosive, flammable, dangerous to the environment, irritating... Pictograms warn of the dangers that can arise from the use of chemical substances. This type of warnings are often visible for many household cleaning products. However, there is an increasing demand for safe and environmentally friendly products.

Chemical and biological detergents are manufactured by the Arabian company A&B Laboratories of Biotechnology, which, instead of using toxic and dangerous ingredients, has begun to use natural substances in the products it produces. The product change occurred when ecodesign was incorporated into the work systems.

By Jon Kepa Izagirre; A&B: “We use raw materials that have not been manufactured as oil derivatives. We use natural substances without chemical synthesis. Derived from oils or cereals. We use them instead of traditional chemical derivatives of oil."

The change that the company has made is due to the accident of the oil tanker Prestige.

By Iñigo Oyanguren; A&B: "The first contact with microorganisms took place in 2003 at A&B. In that year an ecological disaster occurred in Spain. The Prestige was launched into the Cantabrian Sea, where a large amount of oil was released into the sea. As a result, several samples were taken, and we began to search for microorganisms to degrade oil. As a result, we have learned a lot, and from that moment on, we try to apply everything we learned there to other areas."

The microorganisms used to make the detergents are selected in the company's laboratory.

By Iñigo Oyanguren; A&B: "The microorganisms we use are microorganisms found in nature. We have a sample coming to the laboratory - a soil sample or a sample of rotten fruit - from which we take several samples in the laboratory."
The action of microorganisms allows the natural degradation of any compound. Many microorganisms are involved in this degradation. The cultures of microorganisms in the laboratory allow the selection of those who not only know the microbial flora, but also have a high capacity to reject and clean those that may be dangerous to health.

Until recently, detergents have been made with hypochlorite or ammonia. The ability to clean many things is what characterizes these traditional detergents. However, those produced by biotechnology cannot be used for anything. Microorganisms grow in defined environments; that is, they grow, feed, and reproduce in defined environments. As a result, it is not easy to obtain detergents which are capable of performing various washes.

Assisted by Jon Kepa Izagirre: About A&B: “We’ve come a short way with products like this, which sometimes don’t have the same capacity as traditional chemicals, but they come a long way. They are safe to use and less harmful to the environment. There’s more and more use.” The contaminating
effects of detergents have been extensively investigated. Among other things, aquatic species and agriculture are susceptible to damage due to overuse of detergents. The adverse side effects of biotechnological detergents are lower because cleaning agents continue to work even after being discarded from

the pipeline Jon Kepa Izagirre; A&B:
"Biotechnological detergents based on bacteria, fungi or enzymes avoid hazardous chemicals and allow the degradation of the waste that has gone through the pipeline. That reduces the impact.”

By Iñigo Oyanguren; A&B: “Our products have less toxicity, which makes them safer for both the environment and people.”

Any product that is produced has an environmental impact. If you want to reduce the impact, you must also take into account the production process.

By Jon Kepa Izagirre; A&B: "All products have an environmental impact, among other things, because we use raw materials and consume water and energy. We strive to have the least impact possible. In order to reduce the impact throughout the life cycle, we take care of the hiring of suppliers, taking into account transport, water consumption and energy consumption".
