[Ischemia of the heart]
This week Patxi writes to us from Basauri to ask about cardiac ischemia. One day, while running with a friend, he felt a lot of pain in his chest. Even though the pain had gone away after a few minutes, he was very frightened. The doctor later explained that he had suffered cardiac ischemia, and Patxi, wants to know more about this disease.
The heart is a muscle. To perform the pumping task, he needs oxygen and nutrients that reach him through the coronary arteries. The relationship between demand and blood supply remains stable under normal circumstances. But when playing sports and/or making an unusual effort, the heart needs more oxygen and nutrients. If you get less blood than you should, ischemia occurs. Arteriosclerosis, which decreases coronary artery flow, is the common cause of ischemia.
Quitting smoking, taking care of cholesterol, pressure, and diabetes, and maintaining healthy eating habits after heart ischemia are recommended.
That's what we can tell Patxi about cardiac ischemia. As always, we remind you that the address teknopolis@elhuyar.com is available to send you questions about health issues.
