BCBL in search of elderly speakers
A line of research will be undertaken at the BCBL that will link bilingualism and old age. A group of 80 volunteers is being formed for the first research session.
JON ANDONI DUÑABEITIA; BCBL: For this test we are looking for 80 bilingual and monolingual friends, between 65 and 85 years old. When I say bilingual I mean the one who has good command of Basque and Spanish. And monolinguals must have Spanish as their only native language.
We believe that it is precisely in this age group and in this social group that we have the opportunity to see the positive effects of bilingualism, precisely because at this age they are not one hundred percent capable.
The volunteers who come to participate will, on the one hand, perform some tests related to reading and the attention system in front of the computer: reading aloud and silently, pressing buttons... And on the other hand, they will do other tests inside the MRI: they will hear some words lying down.
The ultimate goal would be to find out if being bilingual has positive effects on people’s entire cognitive system. In science there are suspicions of this, but we would like to prove it here in our society. We know that, on the one hand, bilingualism is closely related to attention or attention and, on the other hand, bilingual elderly people have a better memory compared to monolinguals.
This is a new line of research that we want to carry out from now on, especially with people with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.
