#22 ULTRAVIOLET WAVES: Fentanyl crisis
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid, effective against pain in low doses, but at high risk for the side effects it may leave behind when used incorrectly. It has already caused a crisis in the United States and Canada, killing thousands of people every year, overdosed and mixed with other drugs.
The alarm has already been raised in Europe. The British Medical Journal warned in October 2023 that fentanyl is beginning to arrive in the UK. For the authors, we cannot assume that the risk is zero. To address this risk, proposals have been made.
The subject has been studied with ultraviolet waves by Alaitz Ochoa de Eribe Aguirre of Elhuyar and Ana Galarraga Aiestarán, escaping morbidity and stigma. They have also offered news, the “You learn something every day” section and the verification or refutation of certain myths.
The UV wave podcast is produced by Elhuyar for EITB podcasts.
