around 1140 the construction of the Gothic Abbey of St. Denis began; it was the first Gothic church. It was 60 years later that the Arab numbers reached Europe, our system of today’s numbers. in 1202 they were brought from North Africa by Fibonacci. The master builders who had only Roman numerals when they started building St. Denis, therefore, could not perform complex calculations. So how did they build giant Gothic cathedrals?
