the round table “Research for sustainability to inspire young people” was held on November 3. It presented the result of the work carried out by Elhuyar with the support of the Department of Economic Promotion and Strategic Projects of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa: a brochure with some key ideas and projects to address sustainability in the classroom.
This booklet offers teachers some projects and reflections from the perspective of environmental responsibility. It seeks to provide resources to inspire and support the educational community. In fact, today’s young people will inevitably have to be involved in dealing with the environmental emergency. Therefore, it is interesting to promote reflections and actions with young people in the classroom on sustainability and the climate emergency, always taking into account equality, inclusiveness and social transformation.
The round table was led by Aitziber Lasa Iglesias, head of the STEAM Education area of the Elhuyar Science Unit and the event was opened by Itziar Alkorta Idiakez, Academic Director of Summer Courses, Jon Abril Olaetxea, CEO of Elhuyar and Nagore Manzano Rodríguez, Technical Department of Economic Promotion and Strategic Projects of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa.
In succession, Aitziber Agirre Ruiz de Arkaut, head of the Scientific Culture area of Elhuyar, presented 20 key ideas to address sustainability and the environmental emergency in the classroom.
Joseba Aldasoro Galán, STEAM Education technician at Elhuyar, reported on 20 inspiring projects proposed by the researchers. Through these projects, students have to answer questions such as: with the energy necessary to travel 100 km in a specific car, how many loaves can be made? Where does our school waste its energy? Is what we wear sustainable? What types of plastics pollute the beaches?...
One of the projects has been proposed by Iker Aranjuelo Michelena, researcher at the Institute of Agrobiotechnology (IdAB-CSIC). under the name “Phytotracking Air Quality”, it proposes to analyze the impact of traffic on air quality. During the past academic year, she reported on her research and experience with young people from the IES Aralar school in Alegría.
