Laser, one hundred times more powerful

At the Jefferson laboratory in Virginia, with a 500,000 volt electric generator, a high-intensity magnetic field is formed to produce laser beams.

Scientists of the American accelerator Virginian Thomas Jefferson begin to prepare a hundred times more powerful than the laser of any current color. In this laser the electrons are “free” and as in conventional ones do not work limited in the material between two fixed levels of energy.

In this new laser the electrons are extracted from the material, accelerated to the speed around the light and thrown into an electromagnetic field. There they emit photons that come out like laser rays. The “freedom” granted to electrons allows adjusting the wavelength (i.e. the color) of the laser beam by regulating the electromagnetic field.

The new laser will be completed in September of this year and soon the tests will begin. First they will be tested in the infrared area and then in the ultraviolet area.
