An efficient technique for generating entangled photons has been developed

They have developed a technique to generate almost perfect pairs of quantitatively entangled photons with high efficiency. The researchers point out that this is a great step forward in the field of quantum communication, which can be very useful, among other things, for high-security communications. The work has been published in the journal Communications Physics.

The combination of quantum entanglement (Nobel Prize in Physics 2022) and quantum dots (Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2023) has significantly improved the process of producing entangled photons. The inclusion of semiconductor quantum dots in a nanowire has provided an efficient source for the production of entangled photon pairs. The intricate photons are generated by the excitation of this source with lasers; the entanglement is almost perfect and the efficiency is 65 times greater than that achieved so far. In fact, a good degree of entanglement and high efficiency are both essential for practical applications, the researchers point out. And in the experiments so far, one or the other was obtained.

Using this new source, they simulated a method of secure communications: the distribution of quantum keys. Thus, they have shown that sources of quantum dots can be very useful in the field of secure quantum communications.
