A group of European scientists have shown that chaos can be useful for encrypting and sending data on a commercial fiber optic network. The research has been published in the journal Nature.
Other researchers have used chaos in communication, but always in the laboratory. They have now used the chaos based system in a real communications network in Athens.
To turn output into chaotic, the research team has used a pair of diodes guided by nonlinear feedback. The data is integrated into the sender's laser output, which is a major obstacle for anyone who wants to play the pad. In addition, although chaotic signals acquire many frequencies, it is very difficult to interfere. On the other side, on the receiver side, the chaotic output of the second laser is removed. This allows data extraction.
The results of the study seem to indicate that the system is useful. However, they want to know to what extent it is safe and to do this they must prepare a method of measuring the level of safety.
