Photo of the week: mummified cheetah
Seven naturally mummified cheetahs appear in an underground desert cave on the Arabian Peninsula. They are an extinct species, Acinonyx jubatus. Until a few years ago, cheetahs were widespread in much of Africa, even in Western Asia, but today they only cover 9% of their historical expansion. They are believed to have disappeared from the Arabian Peninsula in 1970. They have received the complete genetic sequence of three of the seven cheetahs.
In addition to mummified cheetahs, the bones of 54 other felines have also appeared in five caves near the city of Arar, in northern Saudi Arabia.
