Photo of the week: Nebula of the Ring

A new device from the William Herschel telescope has identified an unknown element in the nebula of the Ring: a ribbon of ionized iron atoms located at the heart of the nebula.

The length of the ribbon is 500 times greater than its orbit around the Sun of Pluto, and its mass is similar to the mass of Mars. The researchers do not know where the iron comes from, but they point out that it is interesting to try to identify them even in nebulae of similar origin.

all details have been published in the scientific journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
